You know… each holiday season I’m reminded what Christmas really means. Not the gifts, not the shopping, not the “perfect tree.” What stays in my heart are the memories, the love, the simple quiet moments that feel like home.

I don’t have many of those sought-after toys anymore from my childhood. What I do have are the memories of gifts, and laughter, and evenings gathered around a tree full of mismatched ornaments, each telling its own story. The ones made by family, friends, even the ones with the dogs' footprints. That tree… it isn’t “perfect,” but it’s ours. And it’s full of love.

It may not feel like it, but the intention of the holidays is for us to slow down and remember what truly matters: warmth, kindness, compassion, generosity, and community. It’s a time to share what we can, especially with people who might need it the most this season. Because at the end of the day, maybe that’s what Christmas really is: not a perfect tree but imperfect people sharing imperfect love. Especially when you feel like a blockhead.

Charlie Brown:
I guess you were right, Linus. I shouldn't have picked this little tree. Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I really don't know what Christmas is all about. Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?

Linus:
Sure, Charlie Brown. I can tell you what Christmas is all about. Lights, please

...And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field...keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them...and the glory of the Lord shone round about them...and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them: "Fear not, for, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy...which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a savior...which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you. Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly, there was with the angel...a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth, peace, goodwill toward men.

That's what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown.

So whatever the true meaning of Christmas means for you, I'm wishing you a season full of memories, generosity, and the kind of warmth that stays with you long after the lights and that little Charlie Brown Christmas tree come down.

I started a tradition a few years ago where, with the help of friends, I pack care packages and deliver them to those most in need on Christmas morning.

Each year we always feel a bit of regret that we can't do more and spread more love to more folks in need. If you would like to make a donation, you can send it via Venmo. The following is a list of items we try to include in the gift packages:

  • Socks

  • Hand warmers

  • Gloves

  • Hats

  • Non-perishable snacks

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Lip balm

  • Hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpaste)

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • First aid kits

If you'd prefer donating to other organizations that help the houseless, there are many wonderful organizations in the Portland Metro area:

Portland Rescue Mission
Blanchet House
Union Gospel Mission
Rose Haven

And I of all people know that this time of year can be especially difficult for some - financially and emotionally. If you're not able to contribute time or money to giving back this year please remember that maybe all the world needs is a little love.
